Once the film abandons that approach, though, and relies instead on weak deception and convenient twists. As for Will Smith, these stars belong to you. Focus starts out great, following in the footsteps of some of the terrific con films (it pays homage to) by being confident and strong enough to let the audience be a part of the con. You will not be disappointed if you aren’t looking for brilliance here. Watch it if you have an evening to kill or a date to impress. The betting scene at the Mercedes Benz Superdome is edge-ofthe-seat stuff. Among the highlights of the movie are the conning sequences. Robbins does his bit for the film sincerely. Rodrigo Santoro as the ruthless billionaire (is there any other kind?) looks the part but you’re left hanging as he is almost shooed off the plot.Īs the credits roll, it is amusing to see a "Con Artist Adviser/Pickpocket Design" credited to one Apollo Robbins who the directors have cited as the best in the trade and an inspiration. Robbie, that pretty face from The Wolf of Wall Street, shows promise in parts but she remains just that and leaves much to be desired. Much like how Nicky charms his victims, Smith works it for his audience. What works for the movie is Will Smith on whose face while the years are showing, the experience is too. Not that the right lesson was learnt from each. Focus reminds you of a few too many movies in the genres it operates. The plot twists are too many and more often than not predictable. Things get complicated when the inevitable love blossoms and further knotty, when the audience has a tough time deciding if Nicky is a scam artist or a lovelorn puppy. Once under Nicky’s wings, Jess proves to be more than just the ideal student. Nicky meets Jess Barrett (Robbie) who is only too keen to learn the tricks of the trade. The Will Smith-Margot Robbie starrer is the story of Nicky Spurgeon (Smith), a con man who is hailed to be among the best in the business. And somewhere in between Focus lost focus on what it wants to be. There are con movies and there are sappy romcoms.
